Why you need an Interior Designer

Why you need an Interior Designer

When you think about hiring an interior designer you might zero in on aesthetics: wall colors, window treatments, pillow patterns. But that’s just scratching the surface of what we do at Accents of the South. This post is to describe the process of how we work and why you might need to hire us!

You may have a vision for your home, but we can help you clarify it and bring it to life. Our training and creative mind-set allow for devising solutions that you might never have imagined. With attention to the tiniest details we can transform your space into a haven that looks polished and pulled together. From floor plans and architectural details to the last nail-head, tassel and tuft, we go beyond cosmetic concerns to ensure that your space feels harmonious through and through.

Our Process

We believe the development of each home is an evolutionary process honed by careful, analytical planning to the realization of a cohesive whole. No matter your project type we start the design process the same. In the initial design meeting we listen to your ideas and thoughts and take notes and gather information. From here we develop a design through research and planning. These preliminary designs are presented and reviewed with you then we discuss the next step and the process continues.

Furniture and a Refresh

If your project is furnishings and a refresh, we at Accents of the South understand how the subtle interaction between space, light and material tie together for a complete effect, curating a custom design as unique as you. We understand the importance of comfortable, well-made furniture and offer hundreds of brands to suite any budget and needs. After the initial design phase, we take our designs from budgeting and ordering to receiving and installation. You can read more about what to expect when you buy furniture from us here.

New Construction or Renovation

If your project is a renovation or new construction, our involvement in this process can begin as early as you start dreaming! Floor plans, elevations, moldings and trim details, cabinet drawings, tile layouts, plumbing, lighting design and selections. We take care of it all!

On larger scale projects, Accents of the South, works in collaboration with you, the architect, and artisans. Involving us in the initial design phase will insure everyone will be on the same page. We can iron out any potential discrepancies that would be the “bones” of the home – such as doorways, ceiling beams or interior columns. It’s one thing to move a wall on paper; it’s another thing entirely to move it after installation.

From Idea to Fruition

Custom English Tudor Home Interiors – Beverly Farrington

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - cropped-photo-of-home2 Custom English Tudor Home Interiors - Beverly Farrington %

Last time we explored our project in the new community of Lendon, we discussed the exterior finishes and our preliminary design process. Construction is moving along and today we are going to dive further into the design process in regards to the interiors of the home. As we mentioned in the last blog our client is downsizing but wants to still be able to host her large family as well as her weekly game night. She also had existing furniture she wanted to bring to her new home. As you can see in the floor plan below the main level is essentially broken down to the Master Suite and one large open space in the forefront of the house. One of our design challenges was to take this large open space and effectively transform it to accommodate a Great Room, Dining Room, Kitchen and a permanent space for game night. Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - floor-plan Custom English Tudor Home Interiors - Beverly Farrington % Open floor plans can prove difficult for some clients who can’t determine how to effectively divide up the space and still have a cohesive room. By utilizing a mix of casual and formal pieces, a warm inviting color palette, and by implementing interior architecture in line with the Tudor Style, we were able to create four spaces that while distinct in their end uses, remain cohesive in style and design. In this open area, our color palette of soft greys and rusts will create a warm space that mingles well with the dark walnut floors and beams that run throughout the room.  A limestone fireplace and custom grey cabinets add architectural interest and incorporate traditional Tudor arches. Velvets and silks will lend an air of formality while print fabrics, an antique demi-lune, and a rustic dining table help to balance out the space, giving our client a versatile, adaptable room where she can entertain regularly but also be comfortable in day to day.

Another design goal was to create a fun and feminine Master Bedroom. By utilizing the same warm greys as the front of the house we were able to keep unity about the main level. However in this space rather than rusts we explored bright and bold hues of pinks and purples. Our focal point is a curved, plum velvet, headboard. The deep color and richness of the velvet add drama to the room and provides a striking contrast to luxurious, billowing silk draperies and white bedding. A velvet striped bench and printed linen accent chair both in vibrant plums and raspberries brings another dose of color to the sumptuous room.

Mountain Home Design Challenges and Solutions – Beverly Farrington

All homes present unique design challenges and our project on Brindlee Mountain was no different. Their challenges were inaccessible views, an incorrectly proportioned living room, and an unconducive environment for entertaining. We were able to resolve all of these changes in our custom interior design.

Architectural Changes

The main level floor plan had the biggest transformation of the entire house.  By eliminating the long closed-in sun porch, the living and dining rooms were able to appreciate the surrounding landscape.  The living room was expanded and the ceilings lowered, making the space feel more inviting and proportional.  Larger windows and glass doors were added, connecting it to a large deck that curved around the back and side of the home, giving our clients the ability to entertain indoors and out.

On the second floor, a library balcony was added that opened to the first floor.  We will discuss this space later in an upcoming blog post!  The basement, on the other hand, needed more alterations.  Originally the back wall had no windows, so glass doors were added to the new outdoor space and future pool.  The sitting and guest rooms were extended to take advantage of the new windows.  Due to our clients’ love of cooking, another kitchen was added in the basement for easy access to the outdoor area and pool.  With these additions the space looks and feels more like the rest of the house rather than a typical dark basement.

Now our clients will be able to enjoy their view on every floor and entertain guests with exceptional indoor and outdoor spaces.  Check back to see the progress as we transform this mountain home!

Kitchen Design in a Cottage in Scottsboro – Beverly Farrington

Kitchen design is critical to a home since it is the heart of the home and where family and friends gather on a daily basis. Our next project features a kitchen in Scottsboro, AL for a family of five, who love to cook and didn’t have a functional space to do so.  Throughout the process we worked with our clients designing floor plan options and helping them make selections for all elements both big and small, creating a cheerful and efficient space for them.

Before: Space was tight around the island

Opening the room and Creating space

In our kitchen design, we first addressed the layout of the island and kitchen table. Due to the island orientation and the location of the kitchen table, the space felt cramped.  By turning the island horizontal in the room rather than vertical and removing the bar stools, there was more space around the sink and range.  A new table, with butterfly leaves, was moved in front of the island.  These self-storing leaves allow for additional seating when needed, and an upholstered bench was added where the table was originally located.  Both of these give the family the ability to seat more people without taking up as much space in the room.  After opening up the paths of travel, we focused on the overall aesthetic.

After: The horizontal island adds space in front of the sink and range; table has butterfly leaves for additional seating

Updating the Original

Originally the kitchen was composed of base grade cabinets, appliances, and vinyl flooring.  Hardwood floors to match the adjacent rooms were added, giving the main level a more cohesive feeling.  Our kitchen design changed the cabinets to a simple cottage style with inset doors and extended them to the ceiling. Along with the white subway tile backsplash, these taller cabinets heightened the room.  The wall color was deepened from pale yellow to a rich buttercup, allowing the white of the cabinets and moldings to pop.  Accents of primary red and marine blue were used throughout the space: in the hand-painted Portuguese tile, metal chairs, bench, draperies and even the knobs on the gas range.  By using a large amount of white and clean, simple use of the bright colors the space feels balanced and not overwhelming.

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - blog-after-4 Kitchen Design in a Cottage in Scottsboro - Beverly Farrington %

After: Hand-painted Portuguese tile and knobs on the range add pops of color; wall color is deepened and color is added through the draperies and bench

The kitchen design now has functionality and unique charm that radiates throughout the rest of the home, giving this young family an enjoyable place to gather, eat and entertain.  We are so happy to have had the opportunity to fulfill their needs and give a warm heart to their home.

Creating a Custom English Tudor Home – Beverly Farrington

Creating a unique and beautiful custom English Tudor home in a planned development is an exciting undertaking. This is exactly what we are doing in our next project located in the new community of Lendon.

Located in scenic Jones Valley, Lendon is a unique community that will model itself after historic neighborhoods, where its residents will have shops, restaurants, schools, parks, and businesses in close proximity of their homes. Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - a_lendon_illustrated Creating a Custom English Tudor Home - Beverly Farrington %

Classic Southern Architecture

The homes of Lendon will feature classic Southern architecture but are open to the distinct and creative interpretation of the individual homeowners.  This will infuse the neighborhood with variety and visual interest, while still keeping a cohesive feel.  Several different styles will be utilized throughout the entire community including Traditional, Neoclassical, Mediterranean Revival, Craftsmen, Bungalow and our style English Tudor.

The English Tudor Style

Between 1890 and 1940 English Tudor was a popular style for American homes.  There are various exterior characteristics of this style.  Stucco walls with decorative wood half-timbering, embellished doorways with arch openings and diamond patterned leaded glass windows are features we were able to incorporate into our client’s brand new exterior.  Drawing inspiration from homes of the Bellemeade area of Nashville, we designed an exterior that blended stone, stucco, and brick seamlessly into a harmonious English Tudor exterior.  Before they could break ground, all of the plans and finish selections had to be approved by Lendon’s Architectural Review Board (ARB).

Creating a home just for our client

Here are the finishes we showed the ARB for approval.

Our client came to us with her plans already drafted.  We made a few changes and revisions based on the design style, her preferences, and overall design goal.  Due to her specific needs and wants, we faced some unique design challenges.  The first was to incorporate her streamlined, contemporary furniture and style within the parameters of English Tudor architecture.  A significant downsize from her current home posed our next design challenge to maximize the space for storage and entertaining.  Making sure there was enough seating and room to host family and friends, was a must.  Al, o her weekly game night meant finding space for a permanent card table and chairs.

Throughout the design process, we worked to meet these challenges and create a custom English Tudor home as unique and amazing as our client. Stay tuned to see our solutions and the big reveal of a beautiful new home.

First Steps to Transforming a Mountain Home – Beverly Farrington

Our clients and projects have taken us all over the South to some of the most stunning settings.  Surrounded by picturesque views of the Tennessee Valley atop Brindlee Mountain in North Alabama, this job was no exception.  Our design objective was to create large open spaces for entertaining while drawing your attention to the vast vistas encompassing the property.  From before to after, we’d like to take you through the design process and highlight some amazing features that made this home so unique.

Here’s the before:

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - exterior-and-views First Steps to Transforming a Mountain Home - Beverly Farrington %

With captivating views in a gorgeous country setting the home’s exterior had a 1990’s housing development look that did not interact well with its natural surroundings.  The home stood out rather than becoming a part of the environment which enveloped it.  The interior lacked a very important feature, being able to see the beautiful scenery anywhere inside the house.  The main living spaces were closed off and lacked windows. The only room to truly enjoy the landscape was a closed-in porch that ran the length of the house.  A room so long and narrow it refused to leave a true purpose.

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - sunporch-collage First Steps to Transforming a Mountain Home - Beverly Farrington %

Another problem area was the great room.  With unproportional high ceilings to the footprint of the room, it felt cold and uninviting.  Our clients entertain often and to have a space that wasn’t inviting just wasn’t going to work.

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - living-room-collage First Steps to Transforming a Mountain Home - Beverly Farrington %

Our design philosophy at Accents of the South is to blend traditional Southern style with modern sensibilities, and this will reign true throughout the Brindlee Mountain project.  We wanted this home to be functional for our clients and to reflect their personal selves.  Through redesigning the exterior and interior architecture of the home, our plan was to create a home that suited its surrounding environment and showcased all of the magnificent views this home possessed.
