Beverly was smitten the moment she walked through the floor door. With natural light, tall ceilings, and views of the Twickenham area that were unparalleled she could see the potential in this historic home.

Yet despite all its negatives like out of date spaces in the bathroom and industrial wiring left over from its previous office residents, there was just something about the house. It felt special. The tall and gracious rooms were warm, and you could feel their sense of place in time. The natural light was amazing. She knew that this fine historical house could once again become a residence, its rooms filled with love and laughter that only a family could bring.

The Original House on Gates

The House on Gates, a handsome Dutch Colonial, was solid white stucco with an asphalt-shingled roof had been put on in the 1920s, the last time the house had been completely remodeled. Over the years, the old-world red color of the roof shingles had faded to a luscious shade of silver-pink. The main body of the 1818 house had a gambrel roof that was put on during the renovation; the side wings, part of an 1834 addition, had a flat roof hidden behind a short parapet wall. Strong front columns stood about 12 feet tall and 24 inches round and had Doric-style capitals. The house had large hand-blown glass window panes, six over six, and a charming pergola off the side. Beverly thought it was one of the best-looking houses in Twickenham.

Designing Your Home from the Ground Up

With a new year upon us and spring on the way, now is the perfect time to begin designing a new home, renovate or add onto your existing home. In addition to our interior design services, Lewis Robinson, who returned back in September, can help clients from the ground up. Lewis has a master’s degree in architecture and a career full of fabulous homes here in North Alabama, Louisiana, and has even renovated houses in Beverly Hills and the New York Hamptons. With his education and professional experience in modern architecture, local historical and neoclassical styles, he can come up with original ideas that fit any style of home.

In any new home, there are 4 phases of the process, and here is how we at Accents of the South would go about designing your home.

  1. Preliminary Design

Designing a new home is a process that allows you the homeowner to fully give your input during the design phase. Our initial meeting will give us an idea of your needs. This includes how many and what types of rooms you want, square footage, budget, and most importantly gives insight into your personal style. Often the owner even wants advice when purchasing a lot to ensure it’s just the right place for the type of home they want.

The next step is to meet with you at the site. A custom designed home should respond to its location, take advantage of important views, trees, rises and dips in the land to give your home a truly custom design, and even look at the context and take design clues from neighboring homes and buildings, which is particularly important in historic districts.

Out comes the trace paper and pens, and Lewis starts sketching. The process begins very loosely with “bubble diagrams” that simply show arrangements of spaces rather than shapes of rooms. These diagrams then develop into floor plans, and the house begins to take shape with character and flow defined. As the design develops the exterior walls of the house, known as elevations, are developed simultaneously with these initial plans. It’s critical that they work both inside and outside.

  1. Design Development

Now it’s time to concentrate on little details. The core spaces of the house are studied and presented, so that we can tailor the look to you. Windows and doors take shape, and the exterior look is finalized.

  1. Construction Documents

With the design finalized, this phase is the most important to your contractor. The construction documents let the contractor know exact room dimensions as well as provide them with charts known as schedules for all of your doors and windows, flooring, wall and ceiling surfaces. The structural engineer will size all the beams and framing, and provide structural details that go into deep detail making sure your house is strong from the foundation up. During this time we will design cabinetry for your kitchens and baths, along with baseboards, door and window casings, and crown moldings.

  1. Construction Administration

Lewis, our construction administrator, our structural engineer and the contractor all work as a team to ensure the HVAC and electrical are installed in the correct locations before the first sheetrock even goes up. Our structural engineer will also provide inspections on the foundation, and we will continue to work together with the contractor until the day you move in. At the end, a “punch list” of items your contractor has either missed or needs to finish will be completed before the final payment is made.

Dr. Patz, Andrea Wilson and Dr. Stewart with the Bronze Healthcare Award for Huntsville Pediatric Associates

Two of the six ASID awards we won last month were for commercial design: Gold in Large Retail for Osborne’s Jewelers, and Bronze in Healthcare for Huntsville Pediatric Associates.

Most people do not realize Accents of the South does commercial design work in addition to residential.  These two types of design are extremely different.  Since commercial spaces are used by the public, space planning and finish selections are crucial, and special rules and regulations must be followed.  Through careful thought and planning, both of our winning projects are functional and beautiful spaces everyone can enjoy.

We’ve also had the privilege of presenting the awards to Osborne’s Jewelers and Huntsville Pediatric Associates, and they couldn’t be happier to have award-winning space!Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - picture1 Huntsville Alabama Commercial Interior Designers %

Our main goal was to accomplish the various requirements and safety concerns necessary to run a large jewelry store, all the while maintaining that showcasing the product was our number one priority.  We achieved this by keeping the layout simple and not overwhelming and selecting finishes that accentuated the jewelry, not detracted from it.  We chose warm neutrals as our backdrop.  Subtle signage was designed to give direction to the cases without competing with what was in them.  Velvet benches and gilded accents topped off our design.

Our clients wanted their busy Pediatric offices to be happy and playful for their young clientele without being over stimulating.  It was also important for each of the five pods for the eight doctors to be distinguishable from each other.  We accomplished this by selecting colorful accents to achieve a cheerful, youthful feel seen in the carpet, walls and whimsical artwork.  Pods were color coded with our vibrant accent colors: pink, blue, yellow and green.  The space is now fun and playful, the perfect space for children of all ages.

When Accents of the South Won ASID Awards we received three gold awards including one for this kitchen. When designing this home, we wanted the homeowners to truly feel part of the surrounding terrain. Soaring ceilings in the great room allow expansive views to be seen from the kitchen.  One nice feature is the two islands: one for prep and the other for congregating and eating, perfect for large gatherings.  Natural finishes like the stone counters and pickled wood cabinets are the backdrop for the custom “twig” sconces and chandeliers we designed for the space.  We mixed comfortable, transitional details that bring serene luxury to a home where weekend guests are welcome and entertaining happens naturally.

Our second gold award was for this large residence. Entertaining and large family gatherings were kept in mind when designing this home, which has a contemporary cottage look with soft hues and rustic pine floors.  We incorporated lap siding throughout most of the main living space to add texture and depth to the walls.  We kept with a neutral palette and added pops of apple green.  The oversized porches off the back of the house allow you to enjoy the beautiful views of the lake and mountains.  All of these elements make this home the perfect retreat.

We were honored to receive a silver award for this kitchen renovation. Our clients were in need of an updated kitchen and wanted a happy color palette with more seating for their family of five.  By adjusting the layout of the island and the kitchen table, we opened up the room.  We designed simple cottage cabinets that ran up to the ceiling, giving the room height.  Pops of scarlet red, creamy marigold and rich marine blue were added throughout the space.  A large rustic table with the ability to expand and a banquette gave the clients plenty of seating.  This space is now functional and family friendly!

It’s great to be back and on the Accents of the South team again! Many of you know me (and my dog Lucy) already.  At the beginning of this year, I went on an adventure to work on a New York Hamptons shingle style house. This project was an amazing learning experience that has taught me so much. I supported incredible designers on the Hamptons project after the design of the project was done. I found though that I had better opportunity to lead projects from the very beginning, work with clients and use my own creativity on all parts of the project here at Accents of the South.

Through the Hamptons project I was exposed to and have studied some of the best from this period of design like Edwin Lutyens, David Hicks, and Albert Hadley, and of course McAlpine Tankersley Architecture with whom I had the great pleasure and honor of working with during this adventure on the Hamptons project.Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - blog-11 "There's No Place Like Home" %For those that don’t know me, I grew up in Huntsville and Athens, Georgia, I left for New Orleans at the age of 18 for a “classical” education in Modern Architecture and received my Masters in Architecture at Tulane University. There I learned about the great modernists who revolutionized architecture and interior design in the early 20th century, like LeCorbusier, Walter Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe.Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - modern-education "There's No Place Like Home" %After college, I spent a summer abroad in Greece studying. This piqued my interest in history which I followed with courses in the Classical world of the ancients. I continued my studies through Italy, studying Pompeii and Palladio, and France studying chateaux and jardins. When I came back to New Orleans I apprenticed, in the modern sense, with the best Classical architect in New Orleans, Barry Fox. There we restored New Orleans Garden District Mansions and French Quarter townhouses.Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - blog-combined-photo "There's No Place Like Home" %My “modern” training in Classicism put me on a focused path for many years in historic preservation and new historically designed houses. After I moved home, Beverly and I met when we worked together on one of Accents of the South’s projects, here I was able to use much of what I had learned in molding, cabinetry and millwork design. Since then we have created many fabulous spaces together, from Greek Revival to Transitional style homes, to rustic and playful Adirondack lake cottages.Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - his-work-lakehous "There's No Place Like Home" %Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - blog-3 "There's No Place Like Home" %I am excited to “re”join the team at Accents of the South! Lake Guntersville Home in Southern Lady

At Accents of the South we design interiors wholly for our clients to fit their desires, lifestyle, and personal style. When a home featuring one of our designs is chosen to be featured in a publication it is simply icing on the cake for our firm. Such was the case with this Lake Guntersville Home in Southern Lady Magazine.

This home for the Gann’s was finished months before the shoot and Southern Lady chose it to feature in their magazine. We were delighted to join them for the photo shoot to help with styling the home with florals and vignettes to showcase the beauty of the home

Because the home was so recently designed, we felt that we only needed to add pops of color to bring to life the home in the pages of the magazine. This Lake Guntersville Home in Southern Lady would reflect the beauty of a home where the family spent time enjoying the exterior as much as the interior.

Beverly chose the color orange to make a nice contrast against the earth tones and green hues seen throughout the first floor. She created floral arrangements featuring oranges, gerber daisies, and ranunculus. By utilizing the Gann’s dishes, silverware, and a few accessories from our shop, Marcy the photographer and I were able to accentuate the spaces and bring them to life.

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - Lake-Guntersville-Home-in-Southern-Lady-by-Accents-of-the-South-Beverly-Farrington-Instagram-300x300 Lake Guntersville Home in Southern Lady %

Since outdoor spaces were extremely important to this home, Beverly and Marcy wanted to highlight them in the photoshoot. Vignettes were set up on the front and back porches to showcase the lake and beautiful scenery that envelops the home. With spring in full swing, the azalea bushes were in bloom adding additional color to the backyard.

When shooting the master bedroom, Beverly drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape by collecting flowers and greenery to make a small delicate arrangement. The magenta color of the azaleas accented the cool, blue hues perfectly and brought the outdoors in.

We were very honored to have this Lake Guntersville Home in Southern Lady magazine and thank Southern Lady for doing a fabulous job capturing the beauty of this home.

Baby Girl Nursery in Huntsville Alabama

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - Baby-Girl-Nursery-in-Huntsville-Alabama-Pinterest Baby Girl Nursery in Huntsville Alabama %

When you’re expecting a baby one thing many mothers look forward to is designing the nursery. That was no different for our lead designer, Andrea Wilson, when she was expecting her baby girl Letty. Her Baby Girl Nursery in Huntsville Alabama was a labor of love and helped her get ready for the arrival of her sweet girl.

Since Andrea knew that she would be the one who utilized the room the most and wasn’t an infant she wanted to design a space that she loved. She wanted a sophisticated, relaxing space for herself that still maintained a fun environment that would stimulate Letty as she grew older.

The design for her Baby Girl Nursery in Huntsville Alabama started with the mid-century modern dresser that Andrea found on Craigslist. She loved the clean lines and multiple drawers for all of those tiny clothes. She painted the shell white and changed the hardware to complement her visions for the room.

Accents of the South by Beverly Farrington - Huntsville Interior Design - Baby-Girl-Nursery-in-Huntsville-Alabama-Accents-of-the-South-by-Beverly-Farrington-Facebook-768x644 Baby Girl Nursery in Huntsville Alabama %

Once the dresser was ready, Andrea began to add other pieces to the room like the classic Jenny Lind crib in black. She felt that the bold color and clean lines added a level of sophistication that contrasted to the light colors throughout the room. She then painted the walls with Benjamin Moore Cool Mint

Andrea continued accenting the room with pieces that were special to her and added a level of fun and pop to the room. Pieces such as the gold-painted bookshelf in the corner and the fuchsia pink bench were bright and cheery and lent themselves to the feelings that she wanted to experience when she was in the room. And, of course, no Baby Girl Nursery in Huntsville Alabama is complete without at least a few monograms!
