As we stay Home Bound, I thought it would be fun and hopefully inspiring to share my personal Home with you. And tell you what design elements I created to evoke so many wonderful and nurturing emotions within.
Today, our Home is more important than ever before. It is indeed a refuge, a place for renewal. It’s shelter gives us safety and the ability to rest both in mind and body, to strengthen us as we face today’s unprecedented challenges.
For me, this new way to live, to stay in place, at first seemed daunting. After all, by nature I am active, social, a doer, I need to be out. But as the days go by I understand more and more this new way of being has given me opportunity. Opportunity to be introspective, opportunity to have the time to share.

Some of you have seen my post on baking cookies for Danny. And with so many wonderful comments inquiring about my kitchen, I thought I’d give you a tour of it. So enjoy!
Kitchens as we all know are the heart of the home. It’s hard to resist not being in the kitchen when someone is cooking. The action of sharing what we prepare, the smell of a familiar dish baking, the camaraderie of just being together are just a few of the reasons why.
When I designed my kitchen I wanted it to truly be the heart of the home. The kitchen originally was on the side of the house and I moved it right to the very middle. I gave it great light with over-sized windows that favored the courtyard and wrapped the cabinets around them. I centered a large island in the space and made a bookcase for all my cookbooks underneath.
It was important to Danny that we have a living area with a TV in the same space so we could be together. So on the interior side of the kitchen a small cozy den area with a fireplace was configured.
The dining area was placed off to one side with over-sized pocket doors connecting it to the kitchen but that could also be shut to make it private .
The cabinets are in a cerused finish, a gray pickling effect over white oak. The counters are in soft tones of white, gray and violet. The material is an Italian marble, Calcutta Vagli. I think there is no equal to the softness in both appearance and hand that marble gives.
The cabinet panels on the lower drawers were designed to look like one large panel. This gives a less cluttered effect. Soft brass was used to accent the cabinet hardware and the hood.
The stainless Thermador appliances have been such a joy to cook with. We have loved the steam oven and because of it we gave up having a microwave. The real hit though has been the built in coffee maker. Never does a party or gathering happen that guest aren’t playing with all its offerings. It is the highlight of my morning to wake up and have a cup of premium brewed coffee just like Starbucks but I never leave the house.
What fun I have had cooking and entertaining in my new kitchen. To be able to enjoy it with family and friends. Today I realize now more than ever that our Home is indeed a special place.
